<p>When should you get massage therapy or bodywork? The question comes up a lot more than you might think. People ask whether they should get massage therapy in the morning, afternoon, or the evening. They want to know if they should come in for massage therapy before they start hurting, or wait until their muscular pain is unbearable. Some ask if it&#8217;s better before, during, or after a workout or sporting event.</p>
<p>In my San Antonio Massage Therapy and Bodywork practice, Massage By Ben, I answer each and every one of these questions by saying &#8220;You should come in every day&#8221;. My answer is, of course, tongue-in-cheek. I then explain that getting massage therapy everyday would be nice but unnecessary and maybe cost prohibitive. Further, when and how often you get massage therapy is based on the goals you would like to achieve with massage therapy. How we achieve your goals with massage therapy is a little more involved than just a simple Q&amp;A in this article. That should be a live discussion between you and your Massage Therapist or Bodyworker, but what about the basic questions? Let&#8217;s answer those:</p>
<p><strong>Q1.</strong> Should I get my massage therapy in the morning, afternoon, or evening? I don&#8217;t want to fall asleep at work, but I&#8217;d like to feel better during the day.</p>
<p><strong>A1.</strong> A lot of people are concerned about this one, but you shouldn&#8217;t worry. Massage Therapy is relaxing and some people do fall asleep during the session, but that doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;re going to be sleepy afterward. In fact many people feel more energized as well as relaxed after their massage therapy session. Still, no matter what time of day you get your massage you&#8217;ll probably sleep better when you do finally go to bed. So, get your massage therapy when it&#8217;s convenient for you.</p>
<p><strong>Q2.</strong> Should I get my massage therapy before my muscular pain starts, or should I wait until it really hurts before I get massage therapy?</p>
<p><strong>A2.</strong> In my experience it&#8217;s much better to get massage therapy to prevent muscular pain or prevent a recurrence of muscular pain. Some Massage Therapists and clients believe that waiting until you&#8217;re experiencing moderate pain allows them to find the source more easily; however, this is seldom true. Get help early.</p>
<p><strong>Q3.</strong> Should I get massage therapy before, during, or after a workout or sporting event?</p>
<p><strong>A3.</strong> Yes. There are specialized massage therapy techniques that are designed to assist you in your fitness and athletic endeavors. Sports Massage is often broken down into pre-event, inter-event, and post-event techniques to improve performance and aid in recovery. If you don&#8217;t have access to massage therapy during each phase of your activity just pick what&#8217;s most important to you - performance or recovery.</p>
<p>I still believe you should come in everyday if you can because if an &#8220;apple a day&#8221; is good then a &#8220;massage a day&#8221; is really, really good. Of course the benefits of massage therapy and bodywork are available to you even if you receive it only once.</p>

<p>The New Year has come and the resolutions have been made. The number one resolution is usually to get into better shape or improve your health.  Keeping one or both of those resolutions would be great but we probably all agree that it&#8217;s pretty hard to do.  So, what if it were easier to keep those resolutions?  Well, it&#8217;s easier to get into shape or improve your overall health when you add massage therapy to your health and fitness regimen.</p>
<p>How can massage therapy help you to keep your resolutions?  There are many ways but two stand out.  First, massage therapy by itself can help you improve your health due to the many healthy benefits of massage including: improved circulation, greater flexibility, better sleep, feelings of wellness, and reduced muscular pain.  Secondly, massage therapy can help you get into shape because the nagging soreness and pain from a new workout routine can be reduced or eliminated.  When your pain levels are reduced you are more likely to want to continue your workouts. Receiving regular massage therapy can also prevent muscle soreness and minor injuries that could prevent you from keeping up with your workout schedule.</p>
<p>Now that you know that massage therapy can help you improve your health and fitness, you might want to know what types of massage therapy are available to you.  There are many styles and techniques used in massage therapy but there are some that are available pretty much anywhere that you can integrate into your health and fitness routine.  The best known massage therapy techniques are:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Swedish Massage</strong> - this is the most common of massage techniques in the United States and perhaps the world. Swedish massage is known for its long gliding strokes, kneading strokes, friction strokes, and percussion as well as joint movements that feel great while improving range of motion. It&#8217;s most often thought of as a &#8220;spa&#8221; type of massage but it&#8217;s much more than that. Swedish massage is great for improving circulation, improving range of motion of your joints, and helping you actually feel better in your own skin. Swedish massage can range from light pressure to a heavier pressure depending on your comfort.</li>
<li><strong>Deep Tissue Massage</strong> - right behind Swedish massage, Deep Tissue Massage is one of the best known and most often requested massage techniques.  This massage is used to root out chronic tension in the deeper musculature and connective tissues that contributes to pain and loss of range of motion in joints.  While some practitioners use a heavier, sometimes uncomfortable, pressure in Deep Tissue Massage it should be noted that a more moderate pressure can reach deep tissues and achieve great results with little discomfort.</li>
<li><strong>Sports Massage</strong> - just like it sounds, Sports Massage is geared toward athletes at every level from professional to the &#8220;weekend warrior&#8221; and those who strive for a higher level of fitness.  Rather than a specific form of massage, Sports Massage is generally a combination of massage techniques tailored to the athlete&#8217;s needs.  The Sports Massage might be applied to one area to relieve pain or might be more general in nature to assure overall performance.</li>
<li><strong>Neuromuscular Therapy</strong> - also called &#8220;NMT&#8221;, Neuromuscular Therapy is a well known technique for relieving muscular pain throughout the body  even &#8220;referred&#8221; pain that originates from someplace other than where it&#8217;s felt.  This technique uses very targeted massage techniques, positioning, and stretching to release myofascial trigger points in muscles as well as restrictions in tendons, muscular attachments, and sometimes fascia surrounding the muscle.</li>
</ol>
<p>All of the massage techniques described here can help you keep on track with your pursuit of better health.  Of course there are many more massage therapy techniques available that are relaxing, stress reducing, and that relieve chronic tension and pain.  You actually don&#8217;t have to know what type of massage to ask for, you just need to know what you want to achieve.  Do you just want to relax? Reduce muscle soreness? Relieve pain? Improve posture?  Ask your massage therapist what they recommend for your particular health and fitness needs and they&#8217;ll help you keep your resolutions.</p>

<p>Over the past ten years it has become more common to find massage therapists treating athletes using massage therapy. The therapeutic advantage of massage not only eases the pain in sore muscles, but actually strengthens an athlete prior to a game or event. It is not uncommon for professional athletes to have their own personal massage therapist.</p>
<p>There are many different massage therapy techniques used to treat athletes. Many therapists use deep tissue massage to treat athletes who are injured. Deep tissue massage is often used as relief for injured muscles. In order to perform a deep tissue massage a therapist must use either the fingers, thumbs or even the elbows to get into the grain of the muscles. In order to practice a deep tissue massage, a therapist must be thoroughly trained as if not done properly, it can cause additional pain or injury. this type of massage is very effective as it works beneath the surface muscles and is a popular method for relieving not only injuries, but also chronic pain and even inflammation.</p>
<p>Implementing various different sports massage techniques and stretches to your program will greatly enhance your ability to work with athletes. Deep tissue massage is just one, some of my favorites are cross fiber friction, muscle stripping techniques, active release techniques and PNF stretches. Learn these and watch your business grow.</p>
<p>To prepare an athlete, a massage therapist will concentrate on the muscles most often used. By using various sports massage therapy techniques, the muscles are relaxed. Being tense will make an injury worse. It is the reason why so many drunk drivers walk away from car accidents while those they hit die. It is because the driver was completely relaxed. The muscles were relaxed. It works the same way with an athlete.</p>
<p>An athlete who goes into a game with muscles that are relaxed and toned is in much better condition to avoid greater injury to those muscles if they are tense. This is why so many athletes use the benefits of massage treatments, such as relaxing spa treatments, prior to sporting events.</p>
<p>A good massage therapist can have a thriving practice in the field of sports medicine if he or she is well versed in treating athletes. They must have complete knowledge of the anatomical structure of the human body and need to know which muscles are most prone to strain and injury. They not only need to know how to relieve the pain from injury, but also to prepare an athlete so that he or she does not get a greater injury. Sports massage techniques include both deep tissue massage and a variety of relaxing massages and stretching techniques. While a physical trainer works with an athlete to improve his or her skills on the field, the therapist works with the body of the athlete to prepare the body for the exertion it will soon endure.</p>
<p>Treating athletes using massage therapy is very common and has been practiced for years. Without the massage techniques performed prior to the game, the athlete may not be able to sustain the beatings that some of their bodies take during a sports competition such as football. This is a growing field and very prosperous for a person who is willing to learn the proper techniques.</p>
